The Phlegrean lakes:
the lake of Averno

menu

The lake of Averno lays inside a volcanic crater which was born during a violent and explosive eruption about 4000 years ago . It is between the Monte Nuovo (in the south-east ) and Monte Grillo (north-west); it is separated from the close Lucrino lake through the tufaceous spur of the Monte delle Ginestre.
The Averno pumices and ashes cover stratigraphically the volcanic materials of Baia's volcans and they are on their east side covered by the materials of the eruption of the Monte Nuovo. Before this event, this lake was in communication with the one of the ancient Lucrino.
The slices of land lightly pendent and next to the lake coasts are taken up by citrusplantations, orchards
and vegetables.
Regarding the inner slopes, the east one is used for cultivating vines and vegetables; the other ones are just partially covered by terraces because in the most part there are chestnut and ilex copses and mediterranean wood .
