The Phlegrean lakes:
the lake of Lucrino

menu

As the majority of the places in the Phlegrean area, since the ancient times the Lucrino lake was commoly considered site of some Greek mythological events.
In the latina poetry, the Lucrino lake is described as place of delicious things and sophisticated worldliness, in the same way as what used to happen in the close Baia.
The poet Orace described Lucrino as the symbol of luxury for its huge artificial swimming-pools and magnificent villas: people of those ancient times were avid of richness and vulgar pleasures.
In an ode by Propertius, the lake landscapes gets melancholy meanings because of his fears: he was an unlucky lover and worried about the fidelity of his beloved Cinzia. The image of the woman prisoner in the water is unforgettable. The lake gets a idyllic oasis, ideally in opposition to Baia; the poet tells he hopes his beloved will be able to resist .
