The 18th century was the period of the wittiest and subtlest riddles and, once again, it was the fair sex, the women to be entitled to hand down and keep our local " nduvinaglie". The Neapolitan riddles, enigmatic and erotic, are the mirror of an imagination and a malice that southern people have always showed in a free and easy way.

'A mamma è curtulella,
'o pate è vicchiariello
e 'a fglia è bella bella.

The mother is short
the father is old
their children are nice.

'A mamma corta corta,
'o pate luongo luongo,
'e figlie piccerenielle
e ghianche 'e niputielle.

The mother is so short
the father is so tall
their children so small
their grandchildren white.

Ce stanno quatto surelle,
doje grosse e doje piccerelle:
'e piccerelle vann' annanze,
'e grosse vanno arréto,
ma nun'e ponno maje arrivà.

There are four sisters:
two big and two little sisters;
the little sisters are in front
the big sisters are on the back
but never reach their little sisters.
