A
solar beauty, a sex bomb physique in a young woman
at her debut in the cinema, soon becoming a star
in the star system. Talent and beauty are the
key words of the fairy tale of the most admired
woman in Italy, as a magazine defined her some
time ago.
It's Sphia Loren, the pizza seller in Neapolitan
movies, the " bersagliera" who De Sica
has a weakness for, or "Filumena Marturano"
who Mastroianni fell in love with.
It is also thanks to her name and talent that
Naples can be appreciated and recognized in the
world today.
Sophia,
the life of a star
Loren
was born in Rome on September 20, 1934. Her real
name was Scicolone but star system rules imposed
a more sophisticated, captivating, less banal
name. She is one of the most popular stars of
the post-war period. She personifies the ideal
Italian beauty: a large pelvis, a sex bomb physique,
an angel face with an evil look. She is also the
heroin of the rags to rich fairy tale: she lived
with her mother a humble life in her hometown,
Pozzuoli, until the time in which, thanks to her
Mediterranean , stunning beauty she started a
carrier as model at the age of 14. Star system's
doors opened to her as she met Carlo Ponti who
offered her the role of Anna in 1951. Her stage
name was first Sophia Lazzaro; it's in 1952 with
the film " LA Favorita" that she would
choose the stage name which would give her popularity
all over the world. In the sixties she is considered
a sex symbol, a myth consecrated by the film "Attila
" starring alongside Antony Quinn who, as
reported by the magazines of that time, courted
her .
In 1957 she got married with Carlo Ponti in Mexico,
a sort of scandal in the catholic world because
he had been previously married and separated.
they would get married in Italy in 1966. Their
marriage was not considered favourably by right-minded
people, to such a point that some movie magazines
tried to boycott the films played by the actress.
In the same time, an agreement with the Paramount
of four films reinforces her international success
since from 1958 with the movie Desire under the
elms". In 1961 People Magazine elected her
one of the fifties most beautiful women in the
world. On June 16 1999 she received the Premio
Donatello for her extraordinary carrier .
Quotes
"She
is the most talented and beautiful woman I have
been worked until now". The sentence, a sort
of spiritual testament, was pronounced by Marcello
Mastroianni few days before his death , so doing
he assigned his personal Oscar to Loren who was
her partner in many films which have consecrated
Italian cinema in the world.
Esteemed and appreciated by film directors of
all over the world, she has fascinated as well
the public as the critics who could not explain
the naturalness and magic arising from Sophia
Loren talent.
Roberto benigni himself, who won the Oscar with
his film "La vita è bella" in
1999 and was prized by Sophia on stage, declared
that " this award has been wonderful for
two reasons, because it is an Oscar and because
it comes from the Queen of the Italian cinema".
Today Sophia Loren is a model housewife; after
played in some Italian fictions who have received
a high success and after the remake of old films
( unforgettable the streap tease scene with Mastroianni
), she lives in Hollywood, writes cook books and
has appeared in Usa tv networks in cooking programs.
Her specialty: obviously, Neapolitan cuisine.
Awards
The Oscar award , the Leone d'Oro, the Golden
Globe: it is true that an award does not effectively
reflect the whole talent of an actress, but we
can admit that Loren's carreer is that of an undisputed
star. A career culminated with the Golden Globe
assigned by foreign press in Italy.
